The Delaware County Building Commissioner's office issues permits for new builds, additions to existing structures, demolition of structures, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, swimming pools, signs and solar installations for projects that are located in the unincorporated area of Delaware County, Indiana.  There are fees associated with all permits, as well as penalties for non-compliance.  Please contact the office for more information.  General contractors, electrical, plumbing and HVAC contractors working within the unincorporated Delaware County are required to register annually with the office and keep up to date insurance and bond on file.  

All commercial projects in the unincorporated county must submit to the State of Indiana to obtain a state release in addition to getting building permits from the Delaware County Building Commissioner's office.

The Delaware County Building Commissioner inspects according to the 2006 International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Fire Code, International Electrical Code, International Plumbing Code, and International Mechanical Code as adopted by the State of Indiana.

The Delaware County Zoning Administrator enforces the Delaware County Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance and The Code of the County of Delaware, Indiana. 

Complaints handled by the County Building Commissioner/Zoning Administrator include, but not limited to the following:
  • Abandoned Property
  • Animal Violation (Farm Animals in Residential Zone) 
  • Business Operations in a Residential Zone
  • Dumping/Waste/Burning
  • RVs, Motor Homes (Being Used in a Residence Zone)
  • Unsafe Buildings
      • Unsafe Building Authority Meetings are scheduled on an as needed basis.  Please contact the office for up to date information on upcoming hearings.
